With the Indian Ocean to its west and a unique national park to its east, the outer coastal suburb of Yanchep is flanked by pristine beaches, wetlands and woodlands offering wildlife and outdoor adventure in equal abundance. The town and national park are less than an hour from central Perth, or under 30 minutes if you're travelling from the northern suburbs. Accessing the park is an easy 10 minute drive from town, or can be accessed direct if you follow Wanneroo Road. Once inside Yanchep National Park, you're invited to choose from one of nine walking trails, ranging from 500 metres to a more challenging 55 kilometres, leading you from wetlands and woodlands to the gorges and caves of an ancient cave system. Or let the local Nyoongar people take you on a spiritual journey to discover the stories and traditions of one of the oldest surviving cultures on Earth. See a community of koalas in their natural environment as you stroll along the purpose built boardwalk. Stop for a picnic, breath in the aromas of the wildflower garden, or swing by the golf course and meet some of the resident kangaroos. With Yanchep Lagoon's calm, crystal clear waters, it's little wonder this beach is a popular spot for swimming and snorkelling. Neighbouring beaches also offer good fishing and surfing, and from Yanchep's marina, you can access some excellent sailing scuba diving. In late spring, keep an eye out for migrating whales as they frolic close to shore on their way down the Western Australian coast.
